I like that the author made this effort to construct an interesting story in this genre, but there are lots of flaws. The lead character goes back in time a year before her father in order to save her father, yet that completely gets forgotten and all of the exchange takes place between the present and the past, And it becomes clear that her actions do nothing to change the outcomes for her father. Third, there are all kinds of situations that don’t make any sense as far as the time travel continuum is concerned. I don’t prefer books that have steamy scenes, but the lead character’s attitude toward intimacy with the man she’s in love with is somewhat absurd. Perhaps that’s why the author decided to paint this lead character as a ridiculous prude. Second, There are religious undertones throughout the book, especially toward the end, but I wouldn’t say that this necessarily qualifies as Christian fiction. First of all the lead character is supposed to be an extremely well educated scientist yet she is so shocked by the differences in male and female roles in the past, as if she has no education or knowledge at all. This time-traveling story combines Hedlund’s skillfully researched historical fiction with a new breath of fantasy and science fiction in a very captivating way. This one has an interesting twist on the theme, but quite irritating in many ways. Come Back to Me is a lot different from Jody Hedlund’s normal books, yet it is also perfectly reflective of her gorgeous writing style and signature historical romance. So I will start with saying I absolutely love time travel stories.
